Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves
Ali Baba was a woodcutter. He was from Persia, in the Middle East.
One day he was at work in the woods when he saw forty men on forty black horses. They stopped near a huge rock. They had forty big, heavy, brown sacks on their backs. Ali Baba watched the men as they got off their horses.
A tall man walked to the rock and said ‘Open Sesame.’ Ali Baba looked and looked again…Something amazing happened… the rock opened! Behind the rock was a cave. The forty men went into the cave with their sacks. Later, when the men came out of the cave, they didn’t have their sacks.
‘Close Sesame,’ said the tall man, and the rock closed!
The forty men got on their horses and went away. Ali Baba went to the rock. ‘Open Sesame,’ he said.
The rock opened… and inside the cave there were hundreds of sacks and wooden boxes. Ali Baba opened a sack and… it was full of diamonds! He opened another sack and… it was full of gold coins! He opened a box and… it was full of silver! He opened another box and… it was full of beautiful jewels!
‘These forty men are thieves,’ thought Ali. ‘I’m going to take some of these coins home for my wife!’
He put some gold coins into his bag and went out of the cave. ‘Close Sesame,’ he said.
The rock closed and he went home.
Ali Baba’s wife, Nasreen, was in the kitchen. Ali Baba told her about the forty thieves and the treasure in the cave.
‘This is wonderful news,’ said Nasreen. ‘Can we take more money and buy a new house and new clothes?’
‘Yes, but we mustn’t tell anyone,’ said Ali. ‘The forty thieves are very dangerous men.’
Ali’s brother, Cassim, was outside the kitchen. He opened the door.
‘Tell me where the cave is!’ he shouted. ‘You must tell me or I’m going to go and look for it myself!’
‘No! Don’t do that!’ said Ali. ‘Go into the woods. There’s a huge rock near the big baobab tree. The rock opens when you say ‘Open Sesame’ and closes when you say ‘Close Sesame’.
Cassim went to the rock. ‘Open Sesame,’ he said. He went into the cave and the rock closed.
‘This is amazing,’ thought Cassim. ‘Gold, silver… beautiful jewels!’ He had three big sacks with him and filled them with gold and silver and jewels. He stood in front of the rock and said ‘Open Wheat’, but the rock didn’t open! He said ‘Open Corn,’ but the rock didn’t open! ‘Oh! What is the right word?’ he thought.
Cassim was angry. He couldn’t remember the word! He sat down to think, but suddenly he heard horses. The forty thieves were outside the cave! Look! A horse! Someone’s in our cave!
‘He can’t have our treasure! He must die!’ said the tall man.
The next morning Cassim’s wife, Zhila, went to Ali Baba. ‘Cassim didn’t come home last night! Do you know where he is?’ she asked.
Ali told Zhila about the cave. ‘Please go to the cave! The thieves are dangerous men. They’ll kill him!’ she said.
Ali went to the rock. It was closed but he heard a noise. ‘Cassim, are you there?’ he said.
‘Yes, yes… I’m here. Help me! I’m hurt.’
‘Open Sesame,’ said Ali Baba and the rock opened. Cassim was on the floor… he couldn’t walk! ‘The thieves said I must die but I didn’t die!’ he said.
‘You didn’t die but you’re hurt! Let’s go home now and the doctor can come to the house later tonight.’
The next afternoon the thieves went back to the cave.
‘He isn’t here!’ said the tall man. ‘We must find him. He was hurt! We must find the doctor who helped him!’
The tall man found the doctor’s house. He was angry.
‘Where’s the man you helped yesterday? Where’s his house?’ he asked.
‘I don’t know,’ said the doctor. ‘It was dark and I couldn’t see the road or the houses.’
‘Then take me to the house tonight when it’s dark,’ said the tall man.
The, doctor took the tall man to Ali’s house later that night and the tall man painted a white cross on the door.
‘Now I know where Cassim and his family live,’ he thought. ‘They must all die! And I’ve got a plan!’
The tall man went to the market and bought thirty-nine big oil pots.
‘Put the pots on your horses then hide inside them’ he told the thieves. ‘I’m going to Ali Baba’s house and you’ll be in the pots. We’ll kill them all tonight when they are asleep!’
That evening he went to Ali Baba’s house. ‘Good evening. I’m an oil merchant from India and I’m very tired,’ he said ‘Have you got a room where I can sleep and a place for my horses?’
‘Of course! Welcome to my home,’ said Ali.
Zhila was in the kitchen with Nasreen. ‘That man isn’t Indian; he’s Persian,’ said Zhila. ‘I don’t like him. Let’s go and look at the pots on his horses.’
They went out of the house into the garden. There were lots of stars in the sky and everything was very quiet. Suddenly they heard a man’s voice: ‘When are we going to kill Cassim and AliBaba and their wives?’
‘When they’re asleep,’ said another voice.
The women looked at the pots on the horses.
Thirty-nine pots in their garden… thirty-nine men in the pots, and one man in the house… The Forty Thieves!
‘Quickly!’ said Zhila. ‘Open the gate.’
Nasreen opened the gate. ‘Shoo, shoo, go away! Shoo, shoo, go away!’ they shouted at the horses. The horses ran out of the garden. They ran and they ran and they ran. They ran into the desert and never came back.
The tall man went into the garden when everyone was sleeping. His horses weren’t there! His pots weren’t there! His men weren’t there! He ran out of the garden, he ran into the desert, but he couldn’t see his horses or his men. He ran and he ran and he ran and he never came back.
In the morning Cassim and Ali Baba woke up early and went into the garden. ‘This is very strange,’ said Ali. The oil merchant isn’t here, and his horses aren’t here! Where are they?’
‘You men are very silly,’ said Nasreen.
‘Yes, very silly,’ said Zhila. ‘The oil merchant from India wasn’t an oil merchant from India.’
‘No,’ said Nasreen. ‘He was the leader of the forty thieves!’
‘Where are the forty thieves now?’ said Cassim.
‘They ran into the desert, and let’s hope they’ll never come back!’ said Zhila.
‘Tomorrow you can go and get the treasure and we’ll give some to everyone in the village!’
The next day Cassim and Ali Baba went back to the rock with ten grey donkeys.
‘Open Wheat,’ said Cassim.
‘No, silly! Don’t you remember? It’s not Wheat. It’s Sesame!’ said Ali Baba.
‘Of course, the word is “Sesame”. Open Sesame,’ said Cassim.
The rock opened and they put all the wooden boxes and sacks of treasure on the donkeys. Then they went back to the village and gave the treasure to the poor villagers.
‘Thank you, Nasreen and Zhila’ said the villagers.
‘You’re very clever women!’

Once upon a Christmas holiday there was a poor family. There was a mother and father and two little ones. The family was so poor that they had no place to live except in an old car out in the back streets. People that knew of them didn’t understand their situation because they didn’t try to understand. The town people would call them names and point fingers at them. easy english book pdf free download
One day the two little ones went up to their mother and father and asked, ” Why do we live in a car and not in a house? Why aren’t we in school?” They had tears rolling down their cheeks.
Easy English book pdf free download Both parents sat them down, ” Dear children, we do not have these things because we don’t have jobs. We have tried to hang on to our jobs. It seems the people we always help are too worried. They worry about the way people look and not the work itself. We have little money to buy new clothes. We’ve tried to ask people for help but we can’t get it. That’s why we aren’t able to have the things that others have.” The children understood and didn’t ever ask again.
Their parents sent them to the car to go to bed. It was the next day and it was the mother’s turn to go out and see if anyone would hire her. There was no luck at all. So the mother and father sat down and talked about what they could try to do about the problems and make their children’s dream come true.
Easy English book pdf free download That day a rich man, by the name of Joe, came into town. Joe had so much money in his pockets that he didn’t know what to do with it all. Joe was the kind of person that couldn’t have children. He wished that one day he could have children. He thought about adopting children some day. He wasn’t quite sure what to do. Joe’ had a heart of gold. He never thought about himself; he was always thinking of others and what they need.
As he was driving along this night he noticed a family of four. They were picking through the garbage for food; to keep warm they stood by a flaming garbage bin. He noticed that they were wearing rags. Their faces were dirty and their hair was messed really badly. Joe walked by and thought some more about what he should do. Easy English book pdf free download
The next day the mother and father went out to look for work. It was coming close to Christmas Eve and they wanted to try to find work once more before everything had closed. Door to door they went. Every where they went they were booted out, rejected, and doors slammed in their faces.
Joe was to witness this and he felt really badly. He couldn’t believe how selfish the people who lived in town were. Joe wanted to do something about it. He thought for awhile, then he realized this family had something that he wanted and that was a family. Joe had something that they wanted. This was a home. Easy English book pdf free download
So Joe decided he would approach them. “I have been watching you since I came into town. I have seen you and your wife trying to make a living but when you have not been able to find work, you can’t make a living that way. I’ve been thinking for couple of days. I have something you want. This is a home. You have something that I want. This is a family.
I want to invite you into my home for Christmas. After Christmas if you want to be a part of my family or should I say if I could be apart of your family, we can discuss it” The family said, “Yes!” After Christmas they all agreed that they should become a family. The children began school. The parents got a job and they lived happy ever after.

1. 40 Rules of Love (by Elif Şafak)
“Every true love and friendship is a story of unexpected transformation. If we are the same person before and after we loved, that means we haven’t loved enough.”
This novel will not only transform your English, but your life; it’s currently my favorite book. It’s beautifully written and the Penguin edition ensures that even relative beginners get a good grasp of the story and the meaning it conveys. If you’re curious about spiritual matters, this is your pick.
2. How to be a woman (by Caitlin Moran)
“Why on earth have I, because I’m a woman, got to be nice to everyone?”
This isn’t your topical feminist manifesto. Caitlin Moran is a powerful, compelling writer and doesn’t mince her words. This book is perfect if you want to learn slang, smash the patriarchy (as any good feminist would!) and laugh while you’re at it.
3. The Perks of Being a Wallflower (by Stephen Chbosky) easy english book pdf free download
“So, this is my life. And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I’m still trying to figure out how that could be.”
This book is the story of a smart and socially awkward teen struggling with mental illness, trying to find his place in the world. If you feel like jumping back to your high school days while brushing up on your teen slang, this one’s for you.
4. Deal Breaker (by Harlan Coben)
“Acceptance of the inevitable, a sign of a wise man.”
This is my favorite crime fiction series. Myron Bolitar, a retired pro-basketball player, solves crimes together with his eccentric best friend, Windsor “Win” Horne Lockwood III. This book is heavy on mysteries – being a crime novel and all – and sports jargon. Warning: if you’re one of those people who can’t put a book down once they’ve started, steer clear of this one.
5. Treasure Island (by Robert Louis Stevenson)
“Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum”
This book doesn’t really need an introduction – it’s a true classic, complete with pirates, sailors and adventures. It’s a great one for expanding your vocabulary, especially if you love to travel.
6. A Thousand Splendid Suns (by Khaled Khosseini) easy english book pdf free download
“Marriage can wait, education cannot.”
This book offers up a story line like no other. Become immersed in the daily lives and hardships of Miriam and Laila as they struggle to find a future in Kabul. The English is simple enough for most learners, but still beautiful and challenging. And the book features characters you’ll never forget.

Learning a new word can be difficult. You need to learn what it means, how to pronounce it, how to spell it, and how to use it in a sentence. But there is also the question of how to use the word naturally, like a native speaker.
To speak natural English, you will need to spend some time studying collocations. Cambridge University (also famous for their English experts) has created a series of books that can help you learn these tricky phrases. They have similar books for learning Phrasal Verbs and Idioms, in case you want to expand your vocabulary even further.
